Some interesting stuff about or related to Buffalo:

  • In American western culture, the "buffalo" is the incorrect term for what is actually the American Bos Bison. Buffalo properly applies to the Asian Water Buffalo and the African Buffalo.
  • Bisons live around 20 years, and are born without their trademark "hump" or horns.
  • A bison's main source of food is grass.
  • Theodore Roosevelt, nicknamed The Cowboy and The Rough Rider, founded the American Bison Society in 1905. Today it is known as The National Bison Association.
  • In 1993, a University of Pennsylvania student was charged with racial harassment after shouting "shut up, you water buffalo" to a group of Delta Sigma Theta sorority sisters, in what is known today as the Water Buffalo Incident.
  • Native to Central and North America, the freshwater drum fish is sometimes referred to as the river buffalo or buffalo fish.
  • Established in 1898, Mount Buffalo is a mountain plateau in Victoria, Australia, around 124 miles northeast of Melbourne.
  • Water Buffalo, restaurant and bar, opened in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2007 and is located at the intersection of E. Buffalo Street and N. Water Street. The restaurant has no affiliation with the Buffalo Water Beer Company.
  • In Native American religions white buffalo are often seen as sacred signs of great spiritual importance.
  • Adopted January 31, 1917, the Flag of Wyoming (pictured) features a buffalo. The state's seal appears branded on the bison's ribs.
  • Wyoming is officially nicknamed the Equality state although it is also known as the Buffalo State or the Cowboy state.
  • Home to many American Bisons, Yellowstone National Park is predominantly located in Wyoming but also extends into the states of Montana and Idaho.
  • Seventeen different states have a city, town or township named Buffalo. Wisconsin has two cities named Buffalo, (located in Marquette County and Buffalo County respectively) as well as another town called Buffalo City.
  • Buffalo Park is the home ground of the Chevrolet Warriors, a cricket team located in East London, South Africa.
  • Several British naval ships have been named HMS Buffalo, while several American naval ships have been named USS Buffalo.
  • Buffalo Soldier was the original nickname of the U.S. 10th Cavalry regiment of the United States Army (pictured), given to them by the native Americans they fought.
